BASW Independents Annual Conference
The changing information landscape
Monday 18 September 2017
This annual conference provides an excellent opportunity for members from the 5500+ BASW Independents community to meet for a day of continued professional development. The day will host presentations on current issues, workshops focusing on business and social work practice along with networking opportunities.
Dr Ruth Allen Chief Executive, BASW
Victoria Cetinkaya Senior Policy Officer - Policy & Engagement (Public Sector), Information Commissioner's Office
Preparing for the new data protection law - GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)
Data protection is changing from May 2018 and all individuals and organisations will need to be compliant. Victoria will be joining us from the Information Commissioners’ Office to discuss what the General Data Protection Regulation is and how to prepare your business and practice. This information will be vital for all Independents registered as data controllers and very useful for everyone within the social work profession.
Pete Feldon - Improving knowledge about what works best in adult social work
When social workers work with adults, we don't always know what works best or why one approach is more successful than others. This has been recognised by the Chief Social for Adults who has set up a project to improve knowledge of the effectiveness of social work.
This project will end up by identifying research priorities, but to get to that point consultation is taking place on finding out what is important to people who work in social work and also those who receive social work.
This workshop provides you with the opportunity to identify those areas of social work where there is most need for better knowledge about what works. The issues raised in this workshop will provide valuable feedback to the project about the perspective of independents. You will also have the opportunity to complete an individual questionnaire later in the Autumn.
Phil Burnell, Spark Accountants - Navigating the IR35 reform and umbrella service companies
The IR35: working through an intermediary legislation reform has had a major impact on independent social workers with many being pressured to work through specific umbrella service companies.
This session aims to clarify the legislation and explore options on remaining compliant, working outside the remit of IR35 as well as navigating the broad range of unregulated umbrella service companies. This session will be immensely valuable in managing tax risk within your business and avoiding crippling retrospective tax bills.
Samantha Olsen, Deputy Director, Social Work Reform, Department for Education - National Assessment and Accreditation System for child & family social workers
Samantha Olsen will be joining the conference to lead an interactive workshop to brief delegates on the development of the National Assessment and Accreditation System and to explore opportunities of how the scheme will be applied and accessible to self-employed child and family social workers.
Gemma Beardmore, Head of Sales & Marketing, Equilibrium Security
Gemma will be demonstrating a live hack highlighting the neccesity in protecting your business and the sensitive information you hold within your business. This session will focus on ensuring your systems are ready in advance of the introduction of GDPR.
