Why we need Hillsborough Law Now: presented by BASW England

Hillsborough Law Now are a movement of families, campaigners, and activists with one shared belief: that people shouldn’t have to fight for justice, justice should fight for people.

The campaign want a new law to do the following:

• Create a new legal duty of candour on public authorities and officials to tell the truth and proactively cooperate with official investigations and inquiries - bringing to an end the depressingly familiar pattern of cover ups and concealment.

• Ensure victims of disasters or state-related deaths are entitled to parity of legal representation during inquests and inquiries. This will mean that This will mean that bereaved families can get public funding, just as public money is used to support Government and public authority lawyers.

Social workers often play a crucial role in disaster recovery and this fringe event, held on the evening after BASW’s Social Work in Disasters conference, gives members the opportunity to learn about how the voice of social work is crucial in this campaign.

The event will feature members of the Hillsborough Law Now campaign, including families with lived experience of disasters and injustice and campaigners who have made it their mission to bring about this much needed change.
