Talking Heads: Social Work and Podcasts

Part of the BASW UK Conference 2023

The fringe event for this year’s BASW UK annual conference will be a special live recording of BASW’s Let’s Talk Social Work podcast .

Podcasting is an incredibly popular format for entertainment, information and education and Let’s Talk Social Work host, Andy McClenaghan and guests will explore the role of podcasts as a learning resource for social work. A session of self-reflection with an audience, if you will.

Andy’s guests will be Patriche Bentick—Senior Practitioner in Camden Council and regular contributor to Let’s Talk Social Work, Joe Hanley—lecturer with the Open University and Dr Sylvia Smith—host of the Social Worker Matters podcast. The conversation will explore the findings of Joe’s PhD research into podcasts as an alternative learning method. The panel will discuss what works and what doesn’t, the importance of voice, authenticity and representation, what they have learned from appearing on and hosting podcasts and standout topics they have covered. The discussion will also cover the guests' favourite podcasts and examine views about the risks associated with the consumption of information via podcasts, whether news and current affairs or content relating to professional issues, given the absence of a regulatory framework for podcast output.

Come along for what will be a fun and relaxed evening.
