Everything Social Workers Need to Know about Universal Credit

An overview of welfare reform and Universal Credit in Northern Ireland by Law Centre (NI)

This session will provide an overview of welfare reform in Northern Ireland.   The first part of the session will focus on the implications of welfare reform for families and children and will cover issues such as:

  • The two-child limit
  • The benefit cap
  • Cuts to disability benefit

The second part of the session will provide a basic overview of Universal Credit, the new working age benefit which will replace six-working age 'legacy' benefits (Jobseekers Allowance, Employment Support Allowance, Income Support, Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit).  It will cover

  • Aims and principles of Universal Credit
  • Who can claim
  • Conditionality and possible sanctions.

Attendance is worth 9 PiP credits.
