BASW NI policy statement concerning restraint and seclusion of children and young people in schools and educational facilities

BASW NI is concerned at the lack of standardised policies and guidance from the Department of Education regarding use of restrictive practices and seclusion with children and young people with additional needs, including those with physical or learning disabilities. This short policy statement outlines the Association's views on the issue and details a series of changes which we believe are required to ensure interventions are therapeutic in outcome and focus on positive behaviour support strategies.

The paper was updated in May 2021 following its initial publication in November 2019
