Advice to BASW members on Age Determination

BASW recognises that social workers are being placed in challenging and conflicting positions in undertaking the task of age assessments of refugee and asylum seeking children and young people. BASW’s advice to our members is that such assessments should be undertaken only when required in the interests of the child/young person; only in conjunction with other professionals; and only with a recognition of their indeterminate nature. This is fully stated in the BASW position statement (BASW Position Statement – Age Assessment, BASW 2015).
