BASW: Credit to MPs on SRE but more to be done

Following today’s announcement from Government that from the age of four, children will receive compulsory relationships education in all schools in England, BASW has welcomed this strengthening of children’s rights. Children will also be taught, at an appropriate age, about sex. Parents will retain the right to withdraw their children from these classes.

New expert healthy relationships group to advise on curriculum

The panel will provide advice and support on issues relating to the delivery of healthy relationships education within the curriculum. This includes a range of areas including improving understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues, violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence, respect and consent, sexism and bullying.

BASW: LGA right to call for new money for social care from Local Government Finance Settlement

As the Local Government Association (LGA) today warns Council tax rises in 2017/18 will not bring in enough money to prevent further extensive cuts to local services next year, BASW is endorsing the LGA´s call for government to use the final Local Government Finance Settlement this month to provide new money for social care.

SSSC Registration fees

Scottish Social Services Council announces new registration fees agreed by Scottish Minsters for social services workers, which will be implemented in September 2017. Social workers will pay £80, (£64 after tax relief) SASW members have contributed to the consultation. SASW is committed to further joint work, sharing of information on the role and remit of the Regulator and appropriate representation of members' views.
