COVID testing for all Front Line Social Workers

Message from the Pandemic Delivery Response Lead, Adult Social Care, Directorate for Social Care and Mental Health, Scottish Government

Routine asymptomatic Covid testing for all Front Line Social Workers

As you will be aware, Lateral Flow Device (LFD) Covid Testing was rolled out to Adult Social Workers on 4th January who visit care homes and work in the community. We are now expanding routine Covid testing for all remaining front line social workers who currently do not have access to kits.

From 12th April please telephone the Social Care Testing helpline 0800 008 6587 between the hours of 9am and 5pm. The helpline will advise you of your nearest PPE hub. LFD tests will be made available to each front line social worker and you will receive a 12 week supply of kits from the hub. Regular testing is only for those staff who come into close contact with clients – staff who are permanently based in an office/home do not need to test.

We ask that staff test at home or in the workplace twice a week (three to four days apart).

Training and guidance webinars

We have organised the following training webinars for front line social workers who have not previously accessed training. All are welcome to attend one or more sessions, although please note that Microsoft Teams can only accommodate around 300-350 people in any one meeting. Places are available on a first come, first served basis and meetings will be opened a few minutes before the start time. We suggest joining a couple of minutes before the start times to maximise your chances of joining.

Guidance and recording of results

Guidance for delivering testing will be available on our web page Social Care Testing. You will also find our FAQs, links to the above training webinars and any future training dates when made available. Please note: training and education materials must be read thoroughly/completed by staff prior to carrying out the first test.

Test results should be recorded using the Covid Testing and Registration Portal online, using the following link: Welcome - COVID Testing Portal ( –both positive and negative results should be recorded. Results should be logged under visiting Professional (social work, OT).

Please note personal information is not shared and lateral flow testing across social care services are aggregated and never attributable to any person/persons. We monitor for public health purposes the number of tests being completed including the prevalence of Covid (hence the need to understand both positive and negative tests).
