Independents is the fastest growing section of our BASW membership with over 2300 members now subscribing to either of the enhanced membership packages Independents Basic and Independents Plus. Due to this expanding area of both our organisation and the market, we are consistently launching new products and services to support our members who practice independently.

Local Networks

Independents Local Networks meet regionally and are aimed towards Independents, practice assessors/ teachers or those considering going independent. All BASW members are welcome to join and access this excellent opportunity to link with like-minded professionals locally.

Each network also has a private chat area within the BASW online forum to facilitate communications, idea sharing and discussions between meetings.

The use of independent social workers in care proceedings can prevent delays in the time vulnerable children at the centre of court cases have to wait to find out whether they are to be taken into care, adopted or returned to their birth parents. This is one of the findings of research by the University of Oxford into the views of family court judges on the role of independent social workers (ISWs).

Leading a BASW CPD seminar

Independent practitioners interested in leading a BASW CPD seminar for other social workers should get in touch with specific proposals for the training sessions they could present. BASW, in partnership with associates and members, is already delivering a successful series of workshops and seminars but needs to meet growing demand for similar CPD opportunities by inviting trainers and independents to put together business proposals for new events during 2013.
