Young Carer Awareness Training for Social Workers
Wednesday 28th April 2021
SASW are pleased to share this event hosted by Young Carers Scotland which will take place via teams on Wednesday 28th April.
About this Event
Edinburgh Young Carers is one of the most well- established and largest organisations in Edinburgh dedicated to working with and supporting young carers in Edinburgh.
We work with young people aged 5 to 25 years old who care for or are affected by someone else at home - usually a parent or sibling.
Young carers are more likely to come from low income households, often care for more than one person and sometimes care for up to 40 hours a week. These families frequently receive support from external professionals who are unaware that the children take on a caring role. These children are greatly impacted by this level of responsibility and this can place great strain on their emotional, physical and personal development. We know that caring effects a young person’s life chances and their ability to go to further education, take a job, move into an independent home and begin their own lives.
Learning outcomes for training:
* What is a young carer?
* The scale of caring in Edinburgh and Scotland
* The Carers Act Scotland 2016and your responsibilities
* How to identify hidden young carers
* The impact of caring
* Top tips for working with young carers and their families
* Working with hesitant families
* Support services for young carers in Edinburgh
* How to make a referral to a young carers service
This training is suitable for newly qualified social workers, social workers, day to day social workers, education welfare officers, healthcare social workers and mental health social workers.
