SASW Community of Practice: Children & Families November 2021

Understanding and responding to harmful sexual behaviour in children and young people

Join us in growing our own Community of Practice and allowing Children & Families Social Workers to reflect together – in a safe environment – to improve their practice, promote the values of social work and maintain the integrity of the profession.

The Community of Practice is for children and families’ social workers who are SASW members. Non-members can attend one session before becoming a member of SASW.

***Rescheduled from 25th October***

This month's topic will be 'understanding and responding to harmful sexual behaviour in children and young people’ with guest speaker Stuart Allardyce

Stuart Allardyce is a Director at the Lucy Faithfull Foundation with responsibilities for Stop It Now! Scotland and research across the UK charity. He has worked as a practitioner and manager with children who have displayed harmful sexual behaviour for over 20 years. He is an honorary research fellow at Strathclyde University and the vice chair of the National Organisation of the Treatment of Abuse.

Stuart will share some key messages from current research literature about children and young people who have displayed harmful sexual behaviour, talk about the policy context in Scotland and lead a discussion on what social workers need to feel more confident in their assessments and responses to cases involving sexual abuse and exploitation perpetrated by children and young people themselves.

The CoPs are a forum to explore areas of practice chosen by our members. If you would like to suggest a topic for a future session please contact sarah.mcmillan@basw.co.uk.

MS Teams link will be shared prior.
