Launch of the BASW Anti-poverty Practice Guide
The British Association of Social Workers is delighted to announce the launch of the BASW Anti-poverty Practice Guide on 4 September 2019 at BVSC, The Centre for Voluntary Action, 138 Digbeth, Birmingham B5 6DR from 5:30-7:30pm.
The Guide has been developed through extensive consultation of BASW members within the UK, and with support of the Child Welfare Inequalities Project. There was a separate focus group with activists from ATD Fourth World who have with lived experience of poverty, to ascertain their views about effective anti-poverty social work skills.
The Guide is practice-focussed and is designed to be useful in assessments, interventions, care planning, and in supervision. It addresses questions such as:
- What understandings of poverty should we draw upon in our social work practice?
- How can we ensure poverty-aware practice?
- Why should we put poverty at the centre of our practice?
- Who should we build alliances with to ensure anti-poverty practice and what skills do we need?
BASW members are encouraged to attend to launch this innovative Guide.
