Delivered in collaboration with the National LGBT Partnership. This interactive training will be delivered via Zoom meetings and is suitable for student delegates nationwide.

Learning Outcomes

After attending the introductory session, participants will have an understanding of:

•    The most common LGBTQIA+ identities and the differences between sexual orientation, romantic orientation, gender identity, gender presentation, trans status and sex assigned at birth
•    The differences between homophobia, biphobia and transphobia and how these are often exercised within health and social care
•    A variety of health inequalities that people in the LGBTQIA+ experience disproportionately and potential social reasons that may contribute to worsened mental and physical health for the community
•    How they, as a social worker, can be an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community and provide an appropriate, informed and inclusive service

The National LGBT Partnership was established in early 2010, in order reduce health inequalities and challenge homophobia, biphobia and transphobia within public services. The Partnership combines the expertise of thirty-six key LGBTQIA+ organisations across England, and works closely with many more. The Partnership is a Sector Strategic Partner of the Department of Health, Public Health England and NHS England, collaborating with a wide range of organisations as part of the Health and Wellbeing Alliance. It has experience of successfully influencing policy, practice and actions of Government, statutory bodies, and others

The partners have a long history of service delivery, working with LGBT people both locally and nationally. Services include 1-2-1 counselling, befriending, peer-support groups, helplines, community leader programmes, testing, advocacy, youth-work, HIV, housing support, drug and alcohol interventions, and much more. This enables the Partnership to act as a catalyst and connector, putting LGBT people and their issues firmly on the agenda of a wide range of decision makers.
