BASW England Lincolnshire Branch re-launch evening workshop: Who Am I? Social Work Identity: Challenge or Opportunity?

This event is open to BASW members and non-members in the Lincolnshire area that want to find out more about BASW and the branch and how you can be supported in your ongoing learning and development. This event will provide you with the opportunity to connect with other professionals in your local area.

Speakers: Erin Lawlor (Mental Health Social Worker) and Sue Taplin (Senior Lecturer in Social Work)

We are exploring what it means to be a social worker and the impact this has on practitioners' mental health. Does being a social worker provide positive support in times of (di)stress? Or is attempting to work out what it means to be a social worker a burden in an ever-changing world.

When a room of practitioners is polled as to why they became social workers, the answers usually include: ‘I wanted to help people’, ‘I wanted to challenge’, ‘I wanted to be ‘the change’’ etc. which may be seen as idealistic and impressive pursuits of social justice and systemic change.  However, it is well-documented in literature that the current economic climate within which social workers are operating is having an impact on their ability to engage as thoroughly with those issues as they may have once hoped.

Social workers are increasingly working in a variety of sectors and with a range of professional groupings and with this comes a challenge around creating and defining a social work identity. We reflect to each other that we need to protect and maintain our wellbeing and mental health but how does our identity as social workers confuse or clarify the situation when we are working to safeguard others?

By exploring the challenge that social workers may experience in defining and maintaining their identity and the direct impact this may have on their mental health, we aim to offer recommendations for ways to refocus on what our role is and how we can maintain a sense of self in the multidisciplinary teams within which we are placed.
