BASW England Coventry & Warwickshire Branch Meeting
Lets talk-‘the military’-veterans mental health, impact on them and their wider family, professionals responsibility and what support is available.
- Lynne Davidson, West Midlands Regional Lead - Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service
- Nicole Lander, Trustee of PTSD Resolution and Chairman of SSAFA for Warwickshire & Coventry (military charities) and Fundraising Advisor to the Allied Special Forces Memorial Grove at the National Arboretum.
This event is essential for children and families, mental health, adult social workers and our partners including health, schools, youth offending teams, probation and the voluntary sector.
The ex-Armed Forces community makes up 6.2 million of the UK Population (Royal British Legion, 2014) with nearly 1 in 10 of all adult males being a Veteran (Armed Forces Covenant Annual Report, 2014).
‘A Veteran is someone who has served in HM Armed Forces for at least one day’ (NHS, 2015).
We have a distorted understanding of who our veterans are and how old they are and as professionals-we need to increase our knowledge and understanding in terms of our assessments, our communication and how we offer support to ex-military, their families and their children.
This session will explore mental health, PTSD, wellbeing, the impact on the wider family and the Armed Forces Bill which will impact our practice as professionals and our responsibilities. There will be practical advice on how to ask crucial questions when supporting veterans and their families.
Our two guest speakers will share information regarding an array of resources/support available to those we are working with and supporting not only available in Coventry and Warwickshire but across the Midlands and further.
