BASW England Coventry and Warwickshire Branch Event - Child Protection and Children's Rights in the 21st Century

Join care leaver Doctor Phil Frampton to discuss a few of the critical practice issues in his new book, Youth and the Mystery Wall

Phil Frampton will be talking about his book Youth and the Mystery Wall which explores the wider issue of the importance of collective empowerment for young people as contrasted with societal attempts to frustrate that empowerment.

  • A challenge to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and the work of Bowlby
  • In a society that infantilises, objectifies and atomises adolescents how can we empower them?
  • Why do governments and media insist that youth crime is out of control when official reports show that youth crime has been on a 50-year decline?

The book argues that contrary to the claims that young people have been given a greater say and more rights in Western society over the last 40 years, in practice we have witnessed a steady intensification of the surveillance, atomisation and oppression of teenagers.

It is published by the International Federation of Social Workers and is currently a free online ebook, downloadable here
