The strengths perspective demands a different way of looking at individuals, families and communities - seeking to develop in services users their natural abilities and capabilities. It is based upon the assumption that those who present to our services already are in possession of various competencies and resources that may be tapped into that will improve their situation.  Building that resilience for future circumstances and challenges is one of the key outcomes of strength based social work practice.

Social workers acting from the strengths perspective are concerned with resources, connections, skills and qualities that will enhance an individual's resilience in the future.  Yet, often those we work with are faced with internal, external and situational obstacles which inhibit their ability to realise their desired future.

This one day training will examine:

  • An understanding of resilience through adversity.
  • The promotion of resilience through motivational interviewing skills and solution-based engagement
  • How to identify and mobilise strengths to achieve desired goals and visions
  • The promotion of environments and relationships conducive to individual self-actualisation.

Trainer - Gareth Mc Gibbon is an independent social worker with over 18 years’ experience in the fields of sexual abuse, family violence and child protection. He has a reputation as a highly sought after consultant, trainer and supervisor. He offers training, practice and consultancy services to criminal justice, child protection, religious, social care organisations and academic institutions.

Previously employed as an Area Manager with the Probation Board for Northern Ireland (PBNI) he held operational responsibility for the management and delivery of all sex offender interventions delivered by PBNI. He has also developed practice internationally working between 2015 and 2017 as invited consultant within New Zealand. In this role he conducted a revision of the assessment and intervention practices of the primary provider of sexual abuse services to the Department of Corrections and Ministry of Social Development in the South Island.

As an evidenced based practitioner Gareth is committed to best practice principles. He has undertaken and produced research on the effectiveness of interventions with those who download child sexual abuse imagery and young people who exhibit harmful sexual behaviours.  He has also published programmes of intervention for adults, young people and the carer’s of children at risk from sexual abuse. Within this work he has developed approaches which promote a strengths-based mind set and which draws extensively on co-production principles to develop co-designed solutions to prevent abuse, reduce obstacles and discrimination and support the relationships necessary to achieve desired outcomes.

PRTL certificates will be provided and training can also be used to claim professional credits from the PIP Framework.
