Course Outline:

Developing and delivering a training course for professional audiences is a valuable string to an independent social worker’s bow, however the knowledge and skills needed to do this are often underestimated. A social work trainer is expected to be both a subject matter expert and able to design the course, meet learning needs, manage the group, the learning environment and the achievement of learning outcomes for any given training activity. This is a complex task in practice, trainers need to be able to be adaptable and responsive whilst still delivering a set of outcomes.

COVID-19 means that the way we used to deliver and receive training has had to change. We are inviting health and social care professionals to join us for a series of virtual interactive CPD activities.

This six half-day session programme, is designed to combine the essential knowledge and skills for independent social workers and other professionals/subject matter experts in the development and delivery of training and development sessions for professional health and social care audiences within the new world of virtual and remote learning, with the goal of equipping participants with the capabilities they need to deliver effective training sessions in their own areas of expertise.

A combination of learning methods will be used throughout the programme, including lecture, workshop and group work. Interactive and experiential methods, in the form of skills practice and critical reflection exercises will be used, to inform participant learning and support application to practice.

A peer presentation / micro-teach will be the method of assessment for the programme and will be undertaken on session 4 of the course.

All sessions will be delivered online, using technology to create a range of accessible, interactive and stimulating continuing professional development options.

Learning Outcomes: This course will provide participants with the following learning outcomes:

• develop a better understanding of the training cycle and how it supports the design and delivery of a training programme

• develop knowledge of how to plan, deliver and evaluate an effective training programme

• develop your understanding of the principles of adult learning and consider how this informs the learning experience

• explore how to match the various training tools and approaches to meet the learning outcomes

• develop an understanding of group dynamics and how it impacts on the learning experience
