Laura is an Experienced Social Worker at Barnsley Children and Young People’s Safeguarding Team and was nominated by Suzannah Rockett.
I have known Laura since she was a newly qualified social worker in October 2018. From the onset she impressed me with her passion and compassion for the children and families she works with.
As an NQSW she strived to get the very best for her families, respectfully challenging professionals (never easy) when she believed they were not being listened to or getting the right level of service.
Laura progressed to an experienced social worker last year and then took on the role of work-based supervisor for a social work student with me supporting her as the practice educator. Once again, she threw herself into this role, which has not been easy with all the challenges of Covid to manage her day-to-day work without the additional responsibilities of taking a student.
Her high expectations and excellent practice have certainly had a huge impact on her student, who has also had excellent feedback regarding one of her assessments, demonstrating what a positive role model she is to students.
She will always listen to different perspectives but at the same time is not afraid to assert her professional views after considering all the viewpoints.
Laura truly is an amazing social worker, and it gives me great pleasure in nominating her.
Feedback from a client:
“Laura worked wonders, social services were always my mortal enemy from being a child, no trust, just pure hate, Laura had her work cut out with me. Laura did the impossible, she gained my trust, helped me get over my fear and hate of social services and helped me through my anger.”
“She is a beacon of hope (I never thought I’d say that).
“Laura Sowerby is an amazing social worker; she needs to be recognised not only for the way she has helped my children but also myself. She is a credit to your establishment and deserves a commendation, she really did/does a miraculous job.
“Thank you, Laura, for everything.”
