Report from the Joint Inquiry into Children who go Missing from Care
There are just over 65,000 children in care in England. Most of these children live in foster care but around 7% of children in care live in one of England’s 1,810 children’s homes. Many have had difficult starts to their lives and have experienced abuse or neglect. As a consequence, these children are often extremely vulnerable and easy prey for predatory adults exploiting the gaps in the systems put in place to keep them safe.
10,000 children are estimated to go missing from care in a year. When these children run away they are in great danger of being physically or sexually abused or exploited. As children in care – foster care or residential care – are three times more likely to run away than other children, agencies’ understanding of, and response, to this issue are critical.
