Child poverty Key facts for councillors
Child poverty is a complex, cross-cutting issue which exists across the country. It affects children’s lives in many ways, across a wide range of services and over many years. It can affect every area of a child’s social, educational and personal development. Whilst family income is an essential factor in reducing poverty, children’s life chances are also affected by their health, education and environment.
A total of 2.3 million children (18 per cent) live in poverty in the UK. These figures often mask the pattern and distribution of poverty at the local level with most local authorities having at least one area with more than 10 per cent of children in poverty.
