September 2011 - BASW England Consultation Response to Ofsted consultation – Arrangements for the inspection of Local Authority children’s services
BASW is clear that child protection is a multi-agency responsibility and therefore supports the proposal to evaluate the effectiveness of all local services including health, education, police, probation and the justice system as well as children's social care services. A whole systems approach is required to see how well these agencies interact and identify gaps. We also support the inclusion of wider services that are concerned with responding to lower level problems and of course the inspection of services provided to children in care or who are leaving care. This remit is clearly a 'big ask' and whilst we agree with the intention crucially, we are interested in how Ofsted will be able to deliver in terms of both its resources and methodology. This needs to be fleshed out in some detail with the opportunity for comment.
