Lords back BASW against Gove's adoption plans
House of Lords backs BASW stance against Government claims that "politically correct" social workers are preventing ethnic children from getting adopted by white candidates. An inquiry by peers also concludes attempts by ministers to reduce the significance of ethnicity and culture in adoption are misguided.

Northern Ireland minister to meet NIASW over bureaucracy survey
Northern Ireland’s health minister Edwin Poots has agreed to meet social workers in the country to discuss their concern that excessive paperwork is stopping them from seeing families. Mr Poots agreed to the meeting, to be held on 14 January, following the launch of a survey by the Northern Ireland Association of Social Work (NIASW), part of BASW, highlighting concerns within the profession.

Winterbourne View final report: social workers best placed to plan long term care for people with learning disabilities
BASW is pleased to hear a pledge of support from care services minister Norman Lamb MP for the social work view that long term care for adults with disabilities should be based on treating the person, not their disability, and that care should be planned in consultation with the person and their family. Commenting on today’s publication of the final report on Winterbourne View, Ruth Cartwright, Manager BASW England said: “As the minister rightly points out, hospitals should only ever be a short term measure for caring for adults with learning disabilities.
