What is self harm?
Self-harm or self-injury is a way some people use for dealing with difficult or painful feelings that they find difficult to talk about. It is a lot more common than people realise – partly because it is often so hidden and is not something people will talk about. It has been estimated that up to one in ten young people will harm themselves at some point, and it is thought to be more common amongst teenage girls.
Who Cares? Scotland
Who Cares? Scotland works with and for Scotland’s children and young people in care. Our work is varied. We lobby local and national government, and we offer information and advice to people working in the care system. We campaign for positive change. But above all, our key offering is in working directly with young people to help them speak out about what they need – and have a right to. Our independent advocacy service guarantees young people in care support and understanding.

Women's Aid is the key national charity working to end domestic violence against women and children. We support a network of over 500 domestic and sexual violence services across the UK.
Workforce Solutions
The Scottish Social Services Council has developed a range of resources to assist employers to meet these challenges. Some are focussed on supporting the individual employee to plan and progress their own learning and development, others are intended for employers to support them in developing the workforce they need now, or may need in the future. This site is designed to give you access to these tools.
Working Families
Working Families is the UK’s leading work-life balance organisation. The charity helps working parents and carers and their employers find a better balance between responsibilities at home and work. Our free Legal Helpline gives parents and carers advice on employment rights such as maternity and paternity leave, rights to time off in an emergency, and parental leave, as well as helping them to negotiate the flexible hours they want. We can also give basic advice on the benefits and tax credits that working parents can claim. We also give advice on maternity discrimination and pregnancy discrimination. Our ground breaking research and campaigns seek to change the way we live and work. To that end, we also work with employers to support them in creating workplaces which encourage work-life balance for everyone. By operating in the real world of pragmatic advice and practical solutions, we are making our vision a reality.
