Child protection has dominated headlines in recent months. From sexual exploitation to Savile, troubled families to ‘sexting’, the need has never been greater for those working in child protection to come together and explore the issues affecting the safety of all children.

How safe are our children? is the NSPCC’s flagship conference for everyone working in child protection. Delegates will gain exclusive access to high-profile speakers including Children and Families Minister, Edward Timpson MP, and will hear about the most recent developments in policy and cutting-edge practice from across the UK.

The conference also sees the launch of a new NSPCC report which, for the first time, assesses how effective UK child protection is at protecting children from abuse and neglect. By examining a comprehensive list of key indicators, we reveal how safe the UK’s children really are.

Who should attend?

The conference is aimed at all those engaged in child protection across the UK. Delegates will include policy makers and researchers; health, education and welfare professionals; service providers and practitioners; and representatives from local government and the police.

Why should I attend?

You will have the opportunity to debate, question and share insights with expert speakers including:

  • Edward Timpson MP, Children and Families Minister
  • Commander Peter Spindler, Metropolitan Police
  • Lisa Nandy MP, Shadow Children’s Minister
  • Dr Maggie Atkinson, Children’s Commissioner for England
  • Tam Baillie, Children’s Commissioner for Scotland
  • Hugh Connor, Chair of the Safeguarding Board for Northern Ireland
  • Jonathan Corbett, Assistant Chief Inspector, Strategy, CSSIW, Welsh Assembly Government
  • Dr Linda Papadopoulos, Psychologist
  • Andrew Webb, incoming ADCS President.

In addition, the conference will look at what the recent changes to Working Together and reforms in health and welfare mean for you. It will examine innovative practices to tackle key child protection issues such as child sexual exploitation, troubled families and online safety.

The conference presents an opportunity to consider wider issues, such as pressures arising from funding cuts and how they could impact your work.

The opening day will focus on setting the national picture of child protection in the UK: what is happening with the current public sector reforms and what this means for child protection now, and in the times ahead.

The second day looks at child protection in practice, providing delegates with the opportunity to learn about innovative work across the UK and enabling closer examination of the critical issues in child protection.

At the end of the first day you will have the chance to attend a networking drinks reception.
