Social work, criminal justice and mental health – the business of all social workers

The seminar will be led by Linda Holt, independent social worker and consultant.
The seminar will explore key themes about social work with people who have mental health needs and who are also involved in the criminal justice system. The seminar will include an exploration of the need to develop broader awareness and ownership of the relationship between offending and mental health. Social work has a long story within this area of work and continues to make significant contributions to the development of practice.
The seminar will be relevant to all social workers working with: young people, adults, parents, as well as social workers already working in the field of criminal justice and mental health including secure hospitals, prisons and community based Criminal Justice Mental Health Teams.
Current Government policy for health and social care includes the need to develop a broader awareness and ownership of the relationship between offending and mental health. There is acknowledgement of themes such as recovery and the importance of housing and employment opportunities.
There will be opportunity to look at:
- why this is social work business and relevant to all social workers
- social policy and social work
- facts and figures about offending and mental health

practice issues:
- promoting social work in the criminal justice system
- challenges in multi-disciplinary settings
- dilemmas in practice
- risk
- examples of the social work role
- identification of training needs
Importantly the seminar will provide an opportunity for social workers to share knowledge, discuss concerns and develop networks.
Linda Holt has experience in the development and management of mental health and criminal justice services. For the last three years Linda was a Mental Health Act Commissioner and is a regular guest lecturer for Degree in social work courses. Linda is a member of the BASW reference group for mental health.
