Ruth began her career as a probation officer, before becoming a social worker in Edinburgh, then an assessment co-ordinator for distressed and disturbed children in Lothian. She then spent two years as a co-ordinator for the International Federation of Social Work’s (IFSW) European seminar in Glasgow.

She went on to become a social worker for a housing association, working with people who were returning to the community from prison and psychiatric hospitals. Since 2000, Ruth has managed SASW, as well as being a convenor for the IFSW Human Rights Commission.

For over 20 years, Ruth has acted as a safeguarder for children in courts and within the children’s hearing system – fulfilling the role of an independent person appointed by the court to safeguard a child’s best interests.

A passionate advocate for children, Ruth has spoken at various UK and international conferences on balancing need, risks and human rights. She is the author of an IFSW training manual on the rights of the child.

Tim Parkinson

Tim Parkinson

Based in Edinburgh, criminal justice specialist Tim began his career as a social worker in the Highlands, before moving to central Scotland to work with offenders in a variety of institutions, including youth justice, a remand centre and a maximum security prison. He also worked with asylum seekers in a detention centre and ran a group work project for offenders. A variety of senior and management posts followed, including managing criminal justice services, before becoming a consultant. Tim joined SASW in January 2011 from a Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) co-ordinator post for the Forth Valley, having been an active BASW member since 1987.
