Advice and Representation service
BASW's Advice and Representation Service is unrivalled within social work. Our team of case officers, all professionally
qualified social workers with specialist legal skills, can offer members support with simple advice or prolonged legal
assistance in both internal and external matters, including the regulatory councils. As a member you can seek telephone
advice and support from the very first day of your membership. Members become eligible for BASW representation after three
months* on a new issue. We are the only organisation whose services extend to students.
* Representation excludes pre-existing issues and is not available to retired and overseas members.
Why you might need the service
Every year, our Advice and Representation Service helps members in a variety of different circumstances. A few brief examples of where we can help are listed below, but please get in touch if you are unsure about your own circumstances. Remember that, as a very valuable member service, representation is only available to people who have been members of BASW for at least 3 months, however advice is available as soon as you have joined:
- Advice regarding discplinary and grievance procedures
- Representation at disciplinary and grievance hearings
- Investigations into professional social work practice including allegations of misconduct
- Issues regarding disability, race and culture in terms of employment and the provision of training
- Difficulties arising from student placements (e.g. a student placement failure)
- Hearings with Regulatory Councils
- Representation at Employment Tribunals
- Our duty service is in operation Monday to Friday between 9am and 4:30pm
